ENCSD Provides specialized instruction for deaf,
hard of hearing, and deaf-blind students
ENCSD provides quality educational services to students ages 5-21 from the 53 eastern most counties in North Carolina. ENCSD is currently serving 100 plus students from 37 counties. Ninety percent (90%) of our students are residential (Sunday evening through Friday afternoon).
Services in audiology, behavior and counseling, child psychiatry, educational assessment, independent living skills, library science, literacy, medical care, occupational and physical therapy, orientation and
mobility, school psychology, sensory integration, speech and language therapy, social work, and
therapeutic horseback riding are provided to support student academic progress in the academic and residential programs.
ENCSD follows a 180 day school calendar augmented by summer programs.
ENCSD is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

ENCSD focuses on high expectations for students
to continually improve academic performance
Students follow the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and participate in the North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction Accountability testing program.
Teachers use proven instructional strategies such as: Guided Reading, Accelerated Reading, Accelerated Math, Thinking Maps, Write From the Beginning, Study Island, Reading Across the Curriculum, etc.
The school Improvement Team’s parents, staff, and community me mbers developed a new three year
School Improvement Plan to address our weaknesses and build on our strengths.
ENCSD is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

ENCSD high school students prepare
for the real world of work
ENCSD offers all four pathways to a North Carolina high school diploma.
Students take Academic or Occupational Course of Study high school classes.
Students can work on and off campus to learn successful job skills guided
by job coaches.
Students graduate prepared to enter college, community college,
a job training program, or the workforce. |
ENCSD students learn how to live independently
The residential program provides opportunities for enhancing students’ educational experiences.
The Independent Living Center strengthens senior high school students’ skills in transitioning to living
in society successfully after graduation through an apartment living program and independent
living skills curriculum.
ENCSD is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) and the
Mason-Dixon Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association. Students participatein varsity sports for
fall, winter, and spring to promote teamwork and sportsmanship, which
aids academic learning.

ENCSD collaborates with a supportive community
Parent communication and learning is promoted through our Parent Learning Days, on-line sign
language classes, Individual Education Program meetings, and parents visits.
The East Carolina University Tele-Medicine program provides students with immediate on-campus
access to high-level medical care.
ENCSD students can take classes at Wilson County Schools and Wilson Technical
Community College.
ENCSD has collaborative agreements with Barton College and East Carolina University that
benefit our students’ academic growth.
ENCSD is supported by many organizations including the Lions, Sertoma, and
Carolina Coasters along with the Wilson business community providing work
sites for our students. |
