A Message from the Director

April 27, 2020

Greetings ENCSD Staff and Families:

I hope you all are staying healthy and making the most of your time at home.
On Friday, April 24th, Governor Cooper announced that all public schools in North Carolina would remain closed to physical attendance for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. This includes the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf. While this was not an easy decision to make, the hope is that it will keep us as safe as possible during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The ENCSD will continue to provide distance learning and social support to students as we have been through the last day on the school calendar, which is June 12, 2020. Please continue to work closely with your child’s teacher(s) regarding this distance instruction. May 11th is a teacher workday and May 25th is a holiday; there will be no instruction for these two days. We are working on a plan for graduation and will announce that once its finalized. Also, staff will be in contact with you soon regarding the return of any personal belongings your child may have at the school.

It has been amazing to see the ENCSD community come together to work in the best interests of our students. We know that when we do come back together physically, school will look different. Discussions are under way at the State level to design what school will look like for staff and students next year. We are all working together to ensure our students receive quality educational opportunities.
We miss you all! The campus just is not the same without your child on it!
Warmest regards,
Dr. Michele Handley
School Director
